Review of Antique Coffee Grinders: American, English, and European

Both gorgeous and useful, "Antique Coffee Grinders", by Michael L. White, is a wonderful book for anyone wanting to build their collection of vintage household items - OR looking for the perfect coffee table book.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

For the coffee table book bunch, it would be hard to imagine a more perfect piece. "Antique Coffee Grinders" weighs about 3 1/2 pounds and sports around 600 photographs (color), so while it isn't unwieldy, you'll know you've got something formidable in your hands when you pick it up - just holding it in your lap conveys the weight of coffee making history it recounts. Guests who enjoy their coffee (or who appreciate high quality, old fashioned house wares) are certain to enjoy paging through this book.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

But charming as this book is, its true value is found in what it offers the collector of old fashioned (primarily antique) coffee grinders and mills. Chronicling more than 300 years worth of grinder history, the antique devotee will find an abundance of information to facilitate their quest for new pieces.

Make no mistake: "Antique Coffee Grinders" doesn't spell out where to shop for the real treasures. That is up to you. Online auctions, flea markets, garage sales or actual antique stores are all possibilities, and hopefully the hunt is part of the fun you get from collecting vintage items. Enjoy it!

But having found good sources for quality, old fashioned coffee grinders, one of any collector's biggest challenges is telling the difference between trash and treasure. That is where this book shines - providing enormously detailed information about the maker of any particular coffee mill and how much a well maintained coffee mill could be worth to the serious antique collector. Some collectors just like getting their mitts on anything old (and the older, the better), but if you gather these vintage pieces in order to build a portfolio with negotiable value, 'who made it', 'when they made it', 'where they made it', and 'how much someone might pay for it' are all critical bits of information. You'll have a difficult time finding a better resource than "Antique Coffee Grinders" to make sure you have those bits!

All in all, I have to say without qualification: this is a fine book. If you love good old fashioned coffee grinders - the real antique stuff - adding this to your library is a 'no-lose' move.

4 Ways to Do Triceps Workout

Triceps comprise sixty percent of our arm muscles. They cover the back of the upper arms. A lot of people disregard their triceps but it is important to workout these muscles to achieve more definition in the upper arms.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

The triceps are not as easy to workout as the biceps. They take more time to be chiseled because it is difficult to flex this muscle. The exercise routine for this muscle is the exact opposite of biceps exercises. For well-defined arms, here are triceps workouts:

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

1. Dumbbell kickbacks. You need a chair to sit on. Lean forward making sure your chest does not go beyond your knees and your ass flat on the chair. Hold your dumbbell to the side and then raise your upper arm to make it parallel to the floor. Position your upper and lower arms so that they form a right angle. Extend your lower arm so that the entire arm is parallel to the floor. Hold this position to feel your muscle burn for effectiveness. Slowly lower the dumbbell so that your arm forms a right angle. For best results, perform two to three sets of 10 to 12 repetitions. Repeat the same steps for the other arm.

2. Overhead dumbbell extensions. Stand upright with legs apart and knees slightly bent. Extend your arm over your head while holding your dumbbell. Slowly lower the dumbbell towards your back. Slowly extend your arm again overhead. Hold the overhead position to feel your muscle burn. Repeat for two to three sets of 10 to 12 repetitions to achieve desired results. Do the same steps for the other arm.

3. Overhead standing presses. Stand straight with legs apart and knees slightly bent. With one dumbbell on each hand, hold the weights above your head to form a right angle with your upper and lower arm. Hold dumbbells together and extend your arms to push the dumbbells forward or in front of you. Perform four to five sets of 10 to 12 repetitions for muscle definition.

4. Seated dumbbell triceps isolation. Be seated with legs apart. Hold one dumbbell with both hands at a right angle from the back of your head. Slowly lift the dumbbell but never let it go directly above your head. While lifting, keep your elbows slightly bent. Lower the dumbbell slowly to return to the right angle position. Do this routine for two to three sets of 10 to 12 repetitions.

Do not neglect your triceps if you do not want to make your upper arms look disproportionate. They basically take twice to thrice as much time to work out than your biceps, so spend more time working your triceps for stronger, bigger, sexier arms.

Chain Saw Sharpeners For Professionals

When considering a chain saw sharpener you can choose from professional quality, enthusiast level, and handyman sharpeners.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

Professional chain saw sharpeners can be mounted on either a wall or a work bench, and will typically sharpen the chain after it is removed from the saw. When selecting a professional quality, bench mounted chain saw sharpener make sure it has at least a one quarter horsepower direct drive motor with large fan and aluminum fins to keep the motor running cool.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

Professional chain saw sharpeners usually have easy head angle adjustments. You should look for features that allow precise adjustments to be made quickly and easily so that you can sharpen virtually any kind of chain design.

The sharpener should also have an adjustable vice to grip any chain type. The vice is especially useful if it's a hydraulic vice. This will automatically lock the chain when the head of your sharpener is lowered, and can reduce the time it takes to sharpen your chain by up to 50%. It is important that the vice will handle an offset of up to 10 degrees so you can maintain the correct corner and leading edge angles on chisel cutters.

You also want a professional chain saw sharpener to have a large diameter cutting wheel. Acceptable grinding wheels are anywhere from 5 inches to 26 inches in diameter. You should ensure that a professional chain saw sharpener comes with several grinding wheels, including 1/8" 3/16" and 1/4" thickness, as well as a wheel gauge wrench, and a dressing brick. The larger the wheel, the less chance you have to get cutter burn on the teeth of the chain.

A cutting length adjuster, and easy-to-read scales for the head angle, also ensure that both left and right cutters are sharpened to equal lengths and angles. Your sharpener should also have a good chain centering feature. High end chain saw sharpeners can be easily adjusted to handle chipper, semi-chisel, and full chisel chains from 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch pitch, as well as the 3/4 inch pitch chains.

Enthusiast level chain saw sharpeners will still provide precise sharpening. They should also include the ability to sharpen chipper, semi-chisel, and full chisel chains, including 1/4 inch, 0.325 inch, 3/8 inch, and 0.404 inch pitches. The angle of the vice guide should be able to accommodate cutter angles anywhere from 0 degrees to 35 degrees.

You should look for an easy to adjust chain vice. On an enthusiast sharpener the vice will probably be operated by a cam lever instead of hydraulics. The ability to adjust your cutter links and the grind depth are very important, and as always there should be a transparent safety guard so that you can see where the wheel is grinding. Chain saw sharpeners in this price range typically come with grinding wheels 4 inches in diameter, and run at speeds of 4,000 to 5,000 rpm.

Hip Roof Framing Plans - Designs and Illustrations

Equal pitch hip roof framing plans showing basic hip framing layout and placement of common rafters and hip roof rafters by custom house plan designer.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

In this article we will try to show you how to build a simple "hip roof" and try and show the component parts that make up an "equal pitch hip roof" structure using the "double cheek cut hip rafter method" used by most framers today.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

In this method of construction the center ridge board will grow by half the thickness of the ridge board material, usually 3/4" at each end of the structure.

In this example we are looking down on the right rear corner of a simple rectangular building. Using half the span distance of the building less half the ridge board thickness which is 3/4" in this example, mark your top plate and set ahead 1 1/2". That will be the location of the first common rafter front and rear on both ends of the building.

Your jack rafters will start from that position and layout on 16" centers toward the right rear corner. This is the hip and jack rafter measurements as shown in this example. You could actually cut all four hip sections from these measurements and they would complete your rafter construction perfectly.

But that would not work well for ceiling joist layout and being able to tie both rafters (common and Jacks) together to create a solid and well built home. So we would want to offset the common and jack rafters 1 1/2" to allow both to be able to lap beside each other and be nailed together forming a well built roof system.

This method will cause all of the rafters and jack rafters on the front side to maintain a 16" on center balance.

This makes cutting the roof sheathing much easier and quicker. In the event the ceiling joist are used as a attic flooring your plywood sheathing will work well also.

Note: This will force you to custom cut the front right corner as well as the front and rear sections on the left end of the building. I show this in figure #4 marked "Special Cut Jack Rafter Layout" near the bottom of the page.

Not to worry though its easy to do. The right front section jacks would simply be 1 1/2" shorter. The left end can be simply measured once your layout work is complete maintaining your 16" on center the entire width of the building. The remaining jack rafters in these two sections would simply decrease each one by a given number according to the roof pitch used.

Common Rafters:
Common rafters are the same on gable roofs as well as on hip roofs and can be figured exactly the same way.

Hip Corners:
Regular pitch hip roofs means that all four sides are on the same angle plane and will run at a 45 degree angle directly from the corner to the end of the center ridge board.

Hip Rafters:
Hip roof rafters are designed with a lower pitch so the corner can be made and roof sheathing can be applied to form the corner of the structure properly. It also carries the smaller jack rafters.

Plan View:
Our plan detail drawing shows all four corners of this simple hip roof structure with all common rafters, hips and jack rafters fitting together properly.

Equal Pitch Roof Rafter Layout:
Placing the ridge and common rafters should be the first thing to be laid out on your wall top plates. From this layout you can mark out all the rest of the common and jack rafter positions. It might be a good idea to draw a big X where the rafters will actually set.

Hip Rafter Side Cut Angles:
This side cut angle can be obtained the same way as the jack rafter cheek cut angle.

Jack Rafter Side Cut Angles:
Side cut angles or commonly called cheek cuts enable the jack rafter to connect properly with the side of the hip rafter.

Plywood Cut Angles:
Even though a equal pitch hip roof has hips running inward at a 45 degree angle the plywood sheathing cut angle is very different and on our 4x12 pitch roof example it turns out to be 46.53 degrees.

Jack Rafters:
Jack rafters start with the first common rafter and continue on to make up the complete corner. These must be calculated properly to fit in order for the sheathing to continue to the corner. When installing your jack rafters be sure to straighten the hip rafter and install the first two jack rafters some where in the middle to secure the hip. When you install one side install the other side of the hip as well. This will help keep the hip rafter nice and straight.

Typical Ceiling Joist Layout:
Ceiling joist layout if placed properly will enable you to set all rafters much quicker and finish with a very neat project.

Floor Tile Cutting - How to Achieve Angle Cuts on Floor Tiles With the Angle Grinder

Another effective method of cutting floor tiles by way of using a power tool is with a hand held angle grinder. These are basically a powerful motor with a 90 degree angled gearbox attached to one end, to which a cutting or grinding disc is firmly attached. They come in a variety of standard sizes which are adapted to hold cutting blades or discs from 4" to 9" inches in diameter, but for lightweight ease and agility for cutting tiles it is best to use either a 4-1/2" inch or 5" inch model.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

Compared to the wet tile saw, they are a lot more dangerous to use and trickier to handle when cutting tiles, but they can be much cheaper to buy and more convenient to manage, especially for guys working out in the field. The necessity for water is not required so they are low maintenance, but they do create a hell of a lot of dust when used to cut masonry products, so it is always best to use these in either a well ventilated room, or better still, outdoors.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

When using, safety equipment is a definite must. The cutting disc spins way faster than the wet tile saw, so there is more chance of the blade throwing debris around, therefore eye protection is essential. They also create much more noise so ear muffs or ear plugs should be used without question, and as for the dust emissions you should wear a respirator or dust mask of some description. Although, this dust being comprised of quite heavy particles, any item of cloth wrapped around the nose and mouth will filter out the harmful particles just as effectively. Don't ever wear your 'Sunday best' clothing when using also, as after prolonged use there is a strong possibility that you will resemble 'Casper the friendly ghost'.

There are predominantly four common types of discs which you can attach to the angle grinder for various applications. Two types are used for when working with metals, such as an abrasive grinding disc for grinding, and an abrasive steel-cutting disc for cutting. Both are reasonably inexpensive, disposable, and wear down in size through constant use, but should never be used for any other application other than metals, such as your tile transitions or subfloor mesh.

For the purpose of cutting floor tiles however, again there are two types of disc to choose from. Like the steel-cutting disc, there is also an abrasive stone-cutting disc which also displays the same properties, but in actual fact this is also suitable for cutting steel, as it is constructed to deal with the obstacle of cutting re-bar when unknowingly embedded in concrete. Two drawbacks of these abrasive discs though, is that not only do you have to change them more often because they wear down in diameter through use, but the depth of cut lessens as the diameter reduces in size.

To combat these factors, we then come to the most effective method of cutting floor tile and stone, which is the diamond cutting disc. These are more expensive than abrasive discs, but they will last a more considerable amount of time longer. They are basically a flat disc of durable steel construction with man-made diamond particles encrusted into the outside diameter, and are perfect for cutting through masonry even when embedded with steel reinforced bar. They should however never be used for cutting steel on its own, as this can not only be extremely dangerous, it can also cause premature damage to the disc. As an additional bonus though, these discs can work with wet tiles and stone, whereas water and any abrasive carborundum disposable disc does certainly not mix well.

Once you have your choice of disc, you'll want to attach it to your angle grinder. This is simply done with a single center locking nut which is tightened by means of a special two-pin angle grinder wrench normally found to accompany the tool.

The disc sits over a thick collared washer which holds it central in place on the output shaft, then is held firmly by another thick washer-type locking nut which is tightened in a clockwise motion with the wrench. By pressing in a locking button attached to the gearbox, this prevents the shaft from spinning when tightening, but be careful not to over tighten as you may find it difficult to remove at a later stage. Because the disc spins in the same direction of the threads on the locking nut, this actually self-tightens the nut to some extent.

Another cautionary pointer when attaching any disc is to make sure it does not wobble and is fixed firmly in place. This can be caused by either having the incorrect disc fitted to the grinder due to the centre hole not resting on the collared washer correctly, or the locking nut has been attached the wrong way round. It can be screwed on both ways, and has a raised shoulder on one side which should be facing out when attaching cutting discs, but inwards with thicker grinding discs, so always check your configuration before powering up to begin cutting, otherwise expect a dangerous and sudden disintegration of your disc.

One final and very important safety tip when changing blades on your angle grinder is to ALWAYS remove the power supply. Never leave the tool plugged into the socket when swapping discs, as if you accidentally switch on the machine during changing, you could be looking at serious injury to your hands, or even an angle grinder wrench thrown in the face at speed.

To avoid this unfortunate mishap from ever happening, one simple tip is to attach the angle grinder wrench to the end of the power tool cord near the plug using a plastic cable tie or similar. That way you'll find that you have to remove the plug from the socket before you can actually use the wrench. It's the simplest of things that can save on a lot of unnecessary grief, and that rule of maintenance should apply to ALL electrical appliances regardless, for your own safety.

How to Mig Weld Overhead - 4 Tips That Work

Do you want to learn how to mig weld overhead just as good as you can when the piece in laying in front of you on a bench? Of course you do or you wouldn't be reading this.

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

Here's how. (these mig welding tips only apply to 1/8" and thicker steel)
Don't fear the heat KYSS...keep your stickout short Watch the angle of the dangle CCC...clean, clean, clean

4 1 2 Angle Grinder

What do I mean by don't fear the heat? When you are a noob, you tend to think that in order to keep the weld from drooping and hanging down like a bad case of hemorrhoids, you need to turn down the voltage and wire speed. WRONG. You need to mig weld overhead just as hot as you when the weld is in the flat position right in front of you. BUT, in order to make this work, you need to...

KYSS. Keep Your Stickout Short. Too long a stickout (the amount of wire sticking out between the copper contact tip and the arc) will soften the arc and not let the beads flatten out.

Whereas using the same heat you would weld for flat position welding along with keeping your stickout short (1/2" or less) will cause the bead to punch in and the arc force will help the bead flatten out and not sag.

Watch the angle of the dangle too. The angle of the mig gun that is. Too much angle either way is bad, 90 degrees is good and a slight drag angle is probable best for penetration but lets be real...sometimes you have to push the puddle. Just don't get crazy with that angle whether you push or pull the mig gun.

Lastly, all the good mig welding techniques in the world wont help much if you welding on dirty, rusty, or oily metal. Use a grinder, a carbide burr, a wire brush, or whatever it takes to Clean, Clean, Clean. The metal does not have to be perfectly clean, but better too clean than too dirty.
